This is a page from this artist's sketchbook (well one of my sketchbooks. I have about 30 of them). It is all about constantly being in the zone of drawing and creativity.

Another work by the artist. This is a study about how shading adds life to your character. When drawing you want to explore the full range of your creative ability.

3d a basic look at the CGI artist's world

With the growing of animation and such, it is important for the upcomming artists to know what a character animator/ modeler is all about. For this hub I have used old character for reference. What a 3d artist must understand is that your character has to have life. That meaning that it has to tell some kind of a story. The  render I have provided shows a turtle and a lizard as friends. It establishes some traits just in the pose and content of the character. Note how something simple can still create a sense of life.

Now, how does one go about making a character? First you need a sketchbook. I would recomend a strathmore hardbound or something similar. Once you have a sketchbook, draw until you can draw no more. It is all about getting ideas down. The more you draw an idea, the more you will see the character develop. I have spent many a days just trying to come up with one character. Do not draw your character from only one angle either. Try as many angles as you can. Once you have your 2d character established it is time to scan and model your character. I will not go into that as of now. However, if you want to get a jump on the information before I post basic modeling (modeling in 3d 101), I would recomend that you go to www.3dcafe.com or www.3dtotal.com or www.learnmaya.com all these sites have links to information that will help you in this department. Some have free tutorials. You can also visit www.amazon.com and pick up some great books on 3d work and modeling. A good aurthor for beginners is Christopher Hart. If you can not find your book at www.amazon.com check out www.boarders.com or www.ebay.com

Best of luck. I will start modeling in 3d 101 on the 8th of march. Email me at DNSiclari@gmail.com if you just can not wait!
